Conroy Defeats Twiss for Oglala Lakota County School Board Position

BATESLAND -Tuesday, voters went to the polls across Oglala Lakota County to fill a vacancy left on the school board when Mike Carlow Jr.’s term was up; Chuck Conroy used strong vote totals in Batesland and Pine Ridge to defeat Maurice Twiss 141-127 with Mary White Face Young Bear receiving 49 and Pat Ross 46.

Conroy, a past school principal and superintendent at Pine Ridge School, was returning to the school board after being off the board for the past year, he has served 27 years on the board since 1989. Twiss had spent 35 years working for Oglala Lakota County Schools.Twiss defeated Conroy in Rockyford 24-1, in Cuny Table 8-1 and in Kyle 31-26 but Conroy used a strong showing in Batesland 42-8 and in Pine Ridge 56-25 to carry the day.

The board will meet in a special session on Wednesday, June 14 to certify the election. Conroy will be sworn in to the board during their July meeting. Conroy will fill the position currently held by Mike Carlow Jr. and will join Bryan Brewer, Angie Eagle Bull, Robert Two Crow and Dr. Richard Zephier on the board.

Oglala Lakota County schools operate pre-school through 8th grade schools at Wolf Creek, Batesland, Rockyford and Red Shirt and a district wide Virtual high school. Enrollments are close to 1,500 students. Attendance is always a challenge as well as finding enough qualified teachers; Wolf Creek School is bursting at the seams and is in need of both short term and long term solutions while a proposed technical high school has support but needs funding streams identified.
