Unchi (Grandmother), Washicun i yapi hunh’ ableze (understood some Whiteman’s language), eyaish (but) Th’unkashila (Grandfather) lila hunh’lala ableze (understood very little of it). Anpetu wanji el (One day), Thunkashila (Grandfather) ohan iyutake (sat down among them), chin (because) Sapa un Wachekiya Wichasha woglake he nah’un chin (he wanted to hear the catholic Priest talk). Woglake iglushtan el (Upon finishing his talk) - Sapa Un kin (the Catholic), th’anka yug’ate yakel chanichipaweg’e - nape un - wiyuth’api kag’e (made the sign-ofthe cross in a big waving motion). Ognahelaka (All of a sudden)! Th’unkashila napsil ye i chiye (Grandfather jumped up) nahan wichoti takiye iyang kigle kiye (and ran off back towards the camp)! Ahtah niye shni shni wichoti pi ekta kihuni (He returned to the encampment all out of breath) - “Taku tohkh’a he?” (“What is the matter?”), th’awichu kin e ye (his wife said); cha Th’unkashila leye (so Grandfather said this): “Sapa Un kin leye, Tipestola glujuju pi nahan

Wakh’an shicha th’a makh’oce letanhan h’eyab i ya po !!” (“The Catholic said this, take your Tipi’s down and get the Hell out of here !!”). Lol (Ho Th’anka Ih’ata).

My kh’ola (friend) Herb Wounded Head would have liked this sign-ofthe cross joke. I am sure he would have told me one in return. I miss Herb. He occasionally sent me words of encouragement.

Le Anpetu kin (Today is) Anpetu Th’okahe (Monday). Tinpsila Wi (Moon of Prairie Turnip - June) Ake Nunpa (12), Wikchemna Nunpa Ake Shakowin (2017). Th’ankal inagnag kiya chu mah’piya (Outside is partly cloudy). Oiyokpaza kiyela kin (Close to darkness), mag’aju kta keyapi (they say it will rain). Anpetu optaya (Through out the day), th’ate he yelo (it has been windy).

The state-wide American Legion Convention will be held in Watertown, SD this week-end (oko-ihanke). New department leaders will be selected. Charmon Dunham is the current state department commander and she has not visited the Pine Ridge reservation. I hear she is afraid to be in the Pine Ridge reservation after dark. Oh well. Good riddance.

In closing, i would like to leave you with a Lakh’ota word (Oie): Chanshko kpa = a wagon box.

Oko ichinunpa kin (Next week), ake wo unglakin kte lo (we will talk again).
