V.I.T.A. Is Vital

BY ELAINE JONES
LCT CORRESPONDENT

MISSION –Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), run by Sinte Gleska University (SGU) Business Management Department Head Maureece Heinert, is a much needed service for those who cannot afford to pay a tax preparer’s fees. The IRS sponsors this program designed to help those who make less than $53,000 a year prepare and file their taxes.

VITA preparers are all strictly volunteer and thus the service provided is free. This does not mean that they do not know what they are doing. Volunteers go through specific IRS training to prepare them to help in tax preparation of simple returns. Volunteers are required to practice and test before they are allowed to file taxes for anyone. SGU Business students are offered credit for taking the VITA course and filing taxes for those who come.

SGU-VITA opened it’s doors January 29 and will remain open through the tax season (April 15, 2018). Hours of operation are Monday from 4pm to 7pm, located at the SGU Business Education Department.
