The Secret to a Successful and Happy Life

Hi, I’m Oitancan Mani Zephier. Everyone calls me, Oi Zephier. This is my first article for the Lakota Country Times as a columnist. I’m going to call it @OZinspires. I’m tired of all the negativity in the media so you’ll find my columns about life experiences and positivity. Yes, sometimes life experiences are negative but not when you’re me. I’ve lived and grown from it all. You can find me on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter as @OZinspires or Let’s do this.

You don’t always know what to trust in the world. So many people give you advice, who do you listen to? There is common wisdom out there in our culture, it’s supposed to be true, but is it? They say “Time heals all wounds.” Well, what if you get hit in the head with a clock? Sometimes time creates wounds. You should do everything in moderation. Except use moderation. You use moderation all the time. Which sounds like an excess of moderation to me - So you can throw all of this out and do whatever you want - You can do anything you put your mind to.

Except grow another mind. Think about that if you can. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Unless the doctor is addicted to apples. Then you can’t get rid of the guy! The early bird gets the worm. But what does the early worm get?

He gets eaten! So, I say, sleep in.

So why do I start like this, with throwing out conventional wisdom? Because the truth is, you never really know who to listen to. So, I’m going to clear this up. You should listen to me. I will be the life expert. These are my lessons. Follow them in moderation.

Are you ready?

I’m going to share with you some of the secrets of life to be successful and happy. This took me 37+ years to learn. Much of it was very difficult times with wanting to give up on it. Some of the time I was praying to live when rockets were falling from the sky around us in Afghanistan. I prayed to live. It must have worked because I’m still here.

It’s likely some of you reading this are younger than I and are going to learn these today. Don’t waste this. You can decide today if you want to be successful in your life early, later, or not at all by applying what I’m about to teach you. That’s the funny thing about life. We have choices. I’m going to teach you these secrets today. If you apply these secrets and the others you learn on your own to your life you will be successful, do whatever it is that you want to do and be recognized for it.

Obviously, life is a very complex experience and there are more secrets than the seven I have listed below.

These are the seven things I believe will help you be successful and happy in 10 years or less. They are not in any particular order. Reorder to what suits you.

Be thankful.

If you can’t do the small things well you won’t be able to do the big things well. Do the small things well.

Seek healing and heal yourself.

Do not be afraid to fail.

Help children.

If you apply these secrets and others to your life you will be successful and happy. You will do whatever it is that you want to do and be recognized for it. I’m not going to beat around the bush. I’ll be straight forward. Whether you apply what you learn is up to you. I hope you do because it will better your life and your children’s life if you have little ones. I apply these concepts daily.

If you can’t do the small things well you won’t be able to do the big things well. Do them well.

My motivational mentor, Les Brown says, what you do some of the time is what you do all of the time. I say to you, do everything 1,000%! Do it well! It doesn’t matter what it is. Go hard or go home. Over dress for job interviews. Be a perfectionist. Cut the dirt edges around your side walk so the dirt doesn’t touch the side walk. My grandma, Clara, always made us do this with knives. We would be on our hands and knees trimming the dirt from the edge of the side walk. Trim your hedges so they’re perfectly straight. Keep your yard clean. If you can’t do the small things well you will not be able to do the big things well. Honor yourself. You represent your parents and your grandparents. Be good to people. Be kind to everything. If you need help, ask for it. Even Michael Jordan, Kobey Bryant and Lebron James needed trainers and coaches. You are not weak because you ask for help you are strong because you ask for help. Don’t forget that.

Know your worth. Society labels you. You are not society’s label. They say you are an A student, B Student, C Student, D student, flunky or drop out. If you have a bad credit score, you can’t buy the bigger house. So, they’ll sell you a smaller house and charge you more for it. Society tells you how much your worth. Do not listen to them. I know you’re worth 1,000x more than what they say. The trick to becoming successful is believing in yourself. You have to believe you’re worth more than everyone tells you. You have to value yourself! If you’re lacking self-confidence fake it. Eventually it’ll grow on you.

Your dream to be somebody was put there for a reason. You have greatness in you. When it’s time to leave this earth leave here with an empty tank. Work toward your dreams till your hair turns gray from stress. Do not let your headstone say: “here lies [Your Name], he/she almost became a doctor. He/she almost became an actor. He/she almost joined the military. He/She was only a dreamer not a doer. If only people didn’t criticize his/her every move. He/she would have done more in life, but he/she was afraid of what people thought.”

That would be a shame.
