Photo courtesy of Oglala Sioux Tribe PINE RIDGE – The Oglala Sioux Police Department is working hard to get more officers to the street. Their efforts are beginning to pay off according to Oglala Sioux Police Chief Robert Ecoffey.

When Ecoffey first took over as head of the department there were 32 officers on the beat. Now, there are 43 on duty, with three more graduating from the South Dakota State Police Academy in June, and another four more cadets set to start classes at Indian Police Academy in Artesia, NM, in July. They will be adding one more additional officer who has transferred in and is being vetted.

“Right now, our capacity for officers is 44. We are quickly moving towards that number,” said Ecoffey. “We are actively engaging with the Bureau of Indian Affairs to get up to 60. The officers we have right now are working hard and I commend them for their commitment to protecting the people,” he added.

While getting 60 officers out on the streets is the immediate goal, that number would only put the department at 75% capacity. Despite the shortfall this is the most officers they have had working at the same time.
