MICHAEL LEWIS HERNANDEZ

FEBRUARY 17, 1969 - AUGUST 16, 2018

Michael Lewis Hernandez was born in Oakland, CA on February 17, 1969 to Karen Hernandez. At the age of 6 months old his parents and the rest of the family moved back to Sharp’s Corner, SD where Michael has lived ever since. Michael attended school at Rockyford, Little Wound and graduated high school from Marty Indian School in 1989. Shortly after graduation Michael enlisted in the United States Navy where he was able to see the world aboard a naval aircraft carrier. After spending time in the service, Michael returned back home and started his college education at OLC and received a degree in carpentry. Michael worked various jobs around the area fixing cars and doing roofing jobs. Michael enjoyed fishing, crossword puzzles, and having a good time with friends and family; he would always use the word “negative.” Michael passed away on August 16, 2018 and will be greatly missed by his entire family.

Michael is survived by his daughters, Victoria Leske of Granite Falls, MN and Amanda Hernandez of Colorado; mother, Karen Hernandez of Sharps Corner, SD; sisters, Troylynn Twiss of Lake Andes, SD, Terrilynn Hernandez and Eleanor (Cetan) Cournoyer both of Martin, SD; nieces, Martika Drapeau of Lake Andes, SD and Shayonna Cournoyer of Martin, SD; nephews, A.J. Drapeau of Lake Andes, SD, Yamni Stricker, Tyray Stricker, Terrance Stricker, Aaron Cournoyer and Malik Cummings all of Martin, SD; 2 grandchildren, aunt, Ellen Hernandez of Sharps Corner and uncles, Terry Hernandez of Sharps Corner, SD and Donald Hernandez of Irene, SD.

Michael was preceded in death by his spouse, Alpha Hernandez; sister, Margaret A. Hernandez; brother, Shane L. Twiss; and uncles, Ben Hernandez, Darrell Hernandez, and Chauncey Hernandez, Jr.

A two-night wake and Rosary services began on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at the Rockyford School Gym. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at the Rockyford School Gym in Rockyford, SD.

Officiating was Pastor Bill White and Ms. Joyce Tibbitts. Burial Services were at the St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery, Rockyford, SD. Arrangements entrusted with Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD.
